If you come to Chiangmai and wish to rent a motorcycle make sure you have an International drivers license and wear a helmet. If you do not then you will be fined and have to pay cash to the Police road checks. As at November 2016 the road checks are everywhere around the moat and rental shops will not tell you about carrying a drivers license but remember in your own countries this is a must so you are warned.
What you should know when renting:
1/. Cost to rent is normally 150-200 a day for a Honda dream. Wave , Yamaha mio etc. The bigger the bike the dearer they become
2/. The rental fee does not cover insurance normally.
3/. If the bike is stolen you pay for another bike--per negotiation
4/. Deposit is normally 3000 baht if you do not leave your passport?
5/. If you leave your passport then your problem if the renter loses it?
6/. If you do not wear a helmet and involved in an accident not of your fault you will still be at fault as you are not wearing one.
7/. Always ask for a padlock or have your own.
8/. You have no insurance cover
9/. Fines range from 200baht up
10/. If you do not wear a helmet and involved in an accident you are in the wrong! and there have been many instances where foreigners have no money for hospital care.
