Mae Sot news: December 17th 2007 Mae Sot in Tak is 510 kilometres from Bangkok and Mae Hong Son 440 kilometres from there.Mae Sot, in Tak Province, is on the flats but you drive thru cool mountains to the Thai-Myanmar border & the Thai-Burma Friendship Bridge and its easily accessible by air or by land only 10 minutes drive from Mae Sot Airport. Many songtaews abound (blue colour) approx 20baht to the Thai-Friendship bridge for your visa run. Direct VIP and First class buses leave from Morchit (bangkok) around 9 -11 PM at night and a VIP Bus costs about 600 baht, first class 400, 2nd ????. An alternative would be a bus to TAK and then minibus or songtaew to Mae Sot and from Chiangmai go to the Atcade Bus station..The trip takes about 7 hrs+ by Bus from bangkok or around 7 from Chiangmai. If by car from Chiangmai 5 - 5.5 hours drive and from Bangkok 6 hours+.

Mae Sot is 84kms from Tak and takes about 11/2 hours. There are gas stations on the route at the start only and when you get to the intersection junction by Mae Sot there is an intersection roundabout 3 way road. Take the road on the right around the roundabout as the one in the middle goes thru Mae Sot town and theres nothing to see here-- Mae Sot town is a bit of a sad dump really. The 3rd road on the right at the intersection this road takes you direct to the Thai Friendship bridge and is a bypass not going into Mae Sot town. Gas stations are at Mae Sot and on this bypass road.

The road from Tak to Mae Sot is good and scenic and theres a few hills but lots of passing lanes. You will have to pass a couple fo police/army check points but normally foreigners have no hassles. The Transport Company (02-936-0199) operates VIP coaches on these routes from the Northern Bus Terminal in Bangkok. Fare is 610 baht one way between Bangkok and Mae Sot. The visas at the border are 500baht on the Burma side when you cross or $15US and use the Immigration at the border left side window and it opens at 6.30am in the morning. Theres never a lot of foreigners doing visas here so you don't have to queue and its quick. Nothing to see in the township but they have good teak carvings and cheap. Tak by the way is the teak furniture place to buy in Thailand.

Turn right over the Min HWY bridge to Bangkok / Kaempaeng Phet about 3 kms on HWY101/ SH 1-- then look for the sign Mae Sot which is very clear & turn right over the bridge & HWY route 105.If you leave early at 4am from Chiangmai the drive is nice as its a drag driving the Lampang to Tak route??? You then get to Mae Sot at around 9am or a little before to do your visa run & out by 10am.
