EXPORTING CONTAINERS TO & FROM
WELLINGTON NEW ZEALAND
The cost to ship in NZ has increased somewhat from Bangkok Thailand. Approx $US1450 the same container going to the Uk will cost you around $US950. To export this same container back from NZ to Bkk is approx $US1850 not including the transport and internal costs you will need to pay before it leaves the wharf. The reason is this. NZ is now in an isolated location and many shipping lines do not consider NZ as an ongoing destination. 30% of all containers in and out of port are empty so shipping lines look at NZ ports as not that viablehhence the high costs to ship. In 2009 we saw the influx of factories leaving the shows of NZ to set up in Thailand. The reasons no thanks to the high dollar, govt policies, taxes, transport costs, high salaries and the regulations which do not disapate to end. It thus makes NZ not the right place to set up a factory shop so exports are now for the fruit, wine and dairy industries
TRANSPORT COSTS:
To give you an example a swingarm truck carrying a 20ft FCl container from port to devan then 60kms to say Levin from Wellington will set you back over $NZ630. Now does this make sense.
NZ is over the top on transport charges so if you have a mate to pick up use him?? Ask for a per km cost for any transport charges. Works out to $NZ2.98 per km to your wharf to depot; depot to destination then return leg. It is not the freight shipping companies fault it is the Govt tax road user charges & contractors fees which make transport in NZ one of the dearest places in the world to have freight moved.
Port Service Charge WLG /// AKL same 75.00 NZD per M3/1000 kilo.
WHEN ASKING FOR A QUOTATION: Ask for port service charges (brokerage costs)? & Unpacking/packing fees.
NZ is over the top on transport charges so if you have a mate to pick uo use him?? Ask for a per km cost for any transport charges as you may get a shock???
