But heres a list of your payments or what we paid for a 20ft FCL with many various items inside. Remember it was over 40 individual items and boxes in the container

Customs forwarding shipping agent charges Ryders Ports charges $350 + fees = $537.19 =OK
MAF Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries Inspection charges $ 147 =OK
NZ Customs Duty on goods $2237 which is OK
Trucking costs Delivery fees $300-$400 =OK
Devanning Company steam clean $145. Take out goods, etc = put back in container $838 less the $145.

Devanning can take 2 days and they do have forklifts. Took 2 Thais 1.5 hours to load by hand in Thailand. But we had a container in July 2009 and it took 14 days to clear. In Thailand the freight movements of containers and turnaround is 4500 per day. In NZ it would be lucky to be 200.

USING A SHIPPING AGENT

1/. Receiving a cheap quotation does not always mean it will be cheap at the end port of entry. If sending a container to Wellington sometimes this container is devanned in Auckland? Ask first where will it be devanned & costs. You can direct to have your container taken to any port for inspection or devanning facility---ask MAF.

2/. Devanning means the goods are taken out of the container. It pays to pack on plastic pallets (not wood) for easy forklift access in an out. If items are packed that do not need to come out then these should be at the back but it makes sense to have easy access in an out as it saves you costs.

3/. If clearing yourself make sure you are present for the devanning and when all your goods are put back in the container & have a padlock. This is the time when most items go missing. We have suffered ourselves with broken shipments when whoever devans packs back the same goods.

4/. Some of the big trucking companies for swingarms in NZ on the wharf ARE OWNER OPERATED so before you receive your container in NZ ask for quotations on the transport costs as Truck Reg & RUC charges have risen in NZ by the government in 2010 and truckies must charge over and above the normal costs for transporting plus they charge for the return journey and you may be billed for any movements of your container on the wharf. However always ask the price for transport as they like many use owner operated drivers. This means there charges per km are over $NZ2.98 per km. When the container comes off the wharf it must go a depot and from there to wherever you wish to remove the contents or if you own it to the point destination in NZ. Wellington wharf is not a major FCL entry point unlike Bangkok's Klong Toey and Laem Chabang which moves min 9500 FCLs per day. There would be lucky to be 200 containers on the Wellington wharf so be aware of these extra charges.

5/. If the container is leased that same container must go back to the shipping company. Again the transport costs are on you.

TRANSPORT COSTS:

You will be charged from the moment the container arrives so if you can get quotations from various trucking companies and local companies who may have backloads. Mainfreight & other owner operators will charge you for both legs. 1/. To take your container to the destination and No2 to bring the empty container back to the start point. Even if you own the container you will be charged for the return leg. The approx prices to Palmerston ex Wellington look at a figure around $NZ900- 1000 as at 2010. Its not cheap and thats for a 20ft FCL container.

IMPLICATIONS FOR THOSE WISHING TO REMIT TT FUNDS TO THAILAND FROM NEW ZEALAND.

If you do not have a Bank account in New Zealand but of course have a Credit card or cash the banks will not allow you to make the transfer if no bank account in NZ but even if so, they cannot guarantee the funds within 1 week. All TT senders must hold a current NZ Bank Account. Our answer from Westpac Bank Information was tourists will never send money home??? they only receive??

We hope the Wellington NZ wharf has improved on their security and staff pilfering in 2009 but the devanning of containers certainly hasn't so please insure your goods bringing containers into NZ. MAF services can be slow but we understand the Key Govt has given MAF a hurry up as containers can take up to 14 days to clear (this is not good for the receiver). The Wellington wharf does need a shakeup but also its in the interest of freight forwarders to keep they eye on importers goods & up to date reports which many do not give.

Any mail will be greatly received on your experiences.

OPTIONS SENDING SHIPMENTS TO WELLINGTON NEW ZEALAND

Personal Effects arriving by Sea freight

As above, personal belongings arriving via sea require an Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration (NZCS 218).(164 Kb) A detailed packing list should include all items in the consignment. A good tip is to number boxes or packages and make a list of the items inside.

Full containers, privately imported goods or personal effects arriving in a sea container also require a Sea Container Quarantine Declaration(20 Kb) which must be presented to MAFBNZ Clearance Service. The declaration should then be signed by a manager of the packing or exporting facility. At the exporting facility the container will need to be inspected internally and externally and found free of contaminants.. The declaration also states what type of packing materials and wood packaging were used.

If the container is to be unpacked at a private residence, the container must be placed on a hard sealed area. Consignments of personal effects shipped as LCL or FAK must be inspected at a transitional facility, not a residence, if inspection is required. Before you send goods to NZ ask MAF the alternatives to have your goods inspected if MAF needs to inspect.

Personal Effects unaccompanied luggage

If leaviung Bangkok and you find you are overweight you will find charges are anywhere up to 1300 baht per kg eg. Quantas May 2010. If this happens to you go to the Laos Aviation depot near the N ? at the overseas departure floor at Suvanabhumi Bangkok airport and they will pack into a box for sending back to NZ. Make sure its personal items eg clothes etc. They will send on the next available flight to NZ. You will be given an Airwaybill invoice. Once back in NZ go to MAF & Customs to get a clearance on the items then go to the International freight office at the airport to uplift. If theres items customs & MAF wish to check then there will be an inspection fee and the Freight office will charge an inspection fee around $33.?? but can vary for them to release your goods.

Goods that the MAF Biosecurity New Zealand Clearance Service wants to see are:

Also see Restricted Items

These items are NOT necessarily prohibited, but they require inspection. In many instances a declaration as to the state of manufacture may lift this requirement. Our inspections are generally to determine cleanliness and the presence or otherwise of insects or prohibited items.

Our recommendations sending goods to NZ:
1/.When asking for quotes make sure you ask for the transport costs on the wharf to depot and depot to your destination point. If too high ask a local carrier if they have a backload for your container.
2/. If items are stolen notify the Company who devans which really is a waste of time but do it anyway and also file a report of the items stolen to the NZ Police, & maybe express your concerns to the press.
3/. Keep a record and itemize everything in the shipment & itemize all goods going back into the container when you inspect or use an agent. The Packing list is very important but the customs will cross check.
4/. If you are a foreigner file to the NZ Embassy any problems and demand a reply.
Note how your goods are loaded and examine all items from your packing list on discharge
5/. Send us an email so we can tell others to beware.

6/. ASK MAF for alternate facilities to inspect and what are your options and where else can you have inspections carried out.

7/. Take photos.

8/. Have insurance and ask to watch the repacking process. This when things can going missing in your container?.

9/. When shipping ask the shipper who will ship the goods to NZ (Shipping Line) & who will be the Delivery Agent in NZ. If this agent is different from your own then you will pay a delivery fee of anywhere around $460NZ basically a service charge. You also need to have the notifying party on the BIL (Bill of Lading) and please ask your agent in NZ to notify you of the Shipping Company who they are agents for so this goes on the BIL to avoid double costs.

10/. WHEN ASKING FOR A QUOTATION: Ask for port service charges (brokerage costs)? & Unpacking/packing fees.

11/. NZ is over the top on transport charges so if you have a carrier in your city or town to pick up use him?? Ask for a per km cost for any transport charges. It is not the freight shipping companies fault it is the Govt tax road user charges & contractors fees which make transport in NZ one of the dearest places in the world to have freight moved.
