Thailand scams 2010
As Thailand is being hit with the world crises there is now more crime from ATM muggings to scams.
Here is a few recent ones.
1/. Condo thefts. Robbers even get thru doors with security cards. They loiter outside maybe on a mobile phone pretending to talk to someone and when someone leaves the condo they enter. They now have access to rooms and in this case the door of a Thai condo had a locking system with a mug over the door handle. This was broken off so do not use these locks as it tells the robber noone is home. It means the mug closes over the handle and theres 2 holes to secure the mug to the door handle by a padlock. In fact it tells the robber noone is inside?? better to use more outside locks that do not look conspicuous and no padlocks. The owner lost many watches and 3 baht of gold to this person on a bike. The cameras installed were unable to identify the culprit.
2/. Gangs may sell a house for cheap by placing an ad in a classified Thai newspaper or advertising space. The scammers sell for cheap of course then use good sales talk to have the unwary buyer go to the Bank and withdraw even 30% of the money for the house. Normally theres a few involved and its a scheme well known in Thailand doen in sometimes pluch hotels or houses that don't belong to them. Some people have parted with millions and once you have the money and in a room with 5 people you have no choice but to hand the money over and lose. In the west Police would track the mobile and interview but in Thailand this does not seem to be the norm as the person withdrew the money herself so she is to blame. Her word against theres?? what to do
3/. ATMs Robberies of people coming up behind people using machines. Watch out. Gold shops and 7/11s are now being targeted as easy prey but so might you be. Check people around you and if you are being followed may help. If you have 2 credit or ATM cards leave one at home but do not carry much cash. Banks are still an easy target for robbers watching big withdrawals and it happens often.
4/. Keep your doors locked in your car. A Thai lady never did and a Thai man opened her car, kidnapped her then dumped her. When travelling do this. Keep your license handy not in your wallet when driving and have the odd 100baht note for you know what.
5/. Giving money to beggers you may regret it if you open your wallet and they see whats inside. Again a king Thai lady made this listake on the Rangit overhead walkway one day and she lost her life.
6/. Many counterfeit notes. Apart from the general appearance, when bank notes are rubbed they make a certain sound. If the sound is “tight” then the paper is special and notes are genuine. Another good sign is to rub the words “government” and the number value of the banknote, as these should be embossed. Furthermore, the foil strip of a fake bank note will reflect light with more difficulty.
LIST OF SCAMS AT SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORT
1/. Taxi touts. Thais in yellow shirts saying they have taxis by the doors and outside. They inflate the price from 400 to 800baht+. Only use the meter cabs and you will find a desk to book. Keep the main ticket & try to remember the taxi number on your rear inside door
2/. People pretending to be security guards who pat your body down while another searches your carry-on luggage? An excuse to take your bags?
3/. Luggage being stolen on the carousels & staff pilfering. This is an ongoing problem
4/. Left luggage keep no valuables in your suitcases & lock
5/. TAT guides even if they have tags showing be wary. Do not book Tourism trips here
6/. If accosted and the person does not go away then head for the nearest Police or Tourist Police office |
7/. Many taxis heading to the airport will not use their meters. This is because they cannot pick up a returning fare! They will ask for 400-450 baht. Tell them OK if they pay tollways?
8/. DO NOT ACCEPT rides from people offering you cheap fares. Some years ago at Don Muang an Egyptian so called taxi driver mugged & killed tourists who accepted rides into town and dropped body parts in drains. Be warned |
9/. The old saying --- if they speak good English be on alert
10/. Watch out also for foreign touts & Chinese pick pockets. Those waiting for friends to arrive touts and pick pockets are also waiting
WHO TO MAKE A REPORT TO
TRUST NOONE AT THE AIRPORT AND WATCH FOR TOUTS AND THOSE OFFERING TAXIS INSIDE THE AIRPORT. July 2011 its a lot better security with less touts inside the airport doors. They have security staff on mobile 2 wheel bikes.
Security at airport to be stepped up

SAMUT PRAKAN : Airports of Thailand will step up security at Suvarnabhumi airport by installing more surveillance cameras and increasing the frequency of patrols by security guards and police. The decision came after a bold hold-up at a bank at the airport on Sunday morning.Airport director Serirat Prasutanont said the hold up at the Bangkok bank branch would not dent passengers' confidence in the airport's security because the crime was not committed close to the passenger terminal.Police patrols would be increased in vulnerable areas of the airport. On Sunday morning, two armed robbers clad in black jackets held up the bank and made off with 3.3 million baht in cash. The robbery lasted 40 minutes.Mr Serirat said the agency generally deploys fewer security guards on weekends.Chaturongkhapol Sodmanee, AoT deputy director, believes the robbery was an inside job.He said the AoT needed financial assistance for purchasing more surveillance cameras as the existing 163 inside the passenger terminal were not enough.''The bank is located on the left side of a bus parking lot in Zone G, which is quite far out and there are no surveillance cameras there,'' Mr Chaturongkhapol said.Their security depended on the rounds made by the guards and police patrols to the area.He said there were also too many advertising stickers on the glass doors of the bank, blocking the view of officers and preventing them from knowing what was happening inside the bank. Some of the stickers would have to go.Assistant national police chief Pol Lt-Gen Chongrak Chuthanon said investigators have made good progress in the case.He refused to reveal any details.
