JETSKI the rip offs continue           

WINAI ''JJ'' Naiman, 28, has been arrested and charged following an altercation about damage to a jet-ski in Patong that was telecast to an audience on the other side of the world. The altercation, with British marines who were taking leave on Phuket, was filmed and became part of the premier episode of a television series that screened in Britain on Monday and live on Channel 3 News on Friday 11th September 2009. It showed JJ pulling a gun on the hapless amrine and tryong to extort 44000 for a dent that was already there. This scammer is no better than the ones in Pattaya but it happens but only a few if this story is true. Watch this movie and you may never hire anything in Thailand again as it is not just jetskis, its cars and motorcycles as well but don't get us wrong it happens to Thais too not just foreigners..

Having become instantly identifiable as ''JJ'' the jet-ski man, Mr Naiman now faces counts of demanding money with threats and possession of a weapon when he allowed a video to take a clip of yet another of his victims.

The governor, who was at the police station in Patong before having a meeting on the jet-ski issue, rejected an appeal from Naiman's family for bail. The weapon involved was a BB gun, & the Governor said intimidation of this kind shown on television was unacceptable. ''Jet-skis are allowed to operate as a sport in Patong, not as a business,'' he said. ''Unless this kind of activity stops, we will ban them all '' he said. However these jetskis are a business and everyone makes on them including the Police at times but we have now heard it has been aired on TV around the world and being sold around the world so Phuket tourism and Thailand's will drop down a peg or 2 even more. The government has also been asked to curb the airport scams as well but Thailand's image as a safe country is fading fast so be warned.

There have been reports since by the Police that the video is fabricated to bring down tourist in Thailand but the film crew maintain there is no doctoring of the video shown????

As you will find when it happens to you hiring a Jetski can be bliss or a nightmare. Many of the jetskis are thrashed by their Thai owners and they can be bought second hand at JSSR auction for 100,000baht or so. But most people who hire them are never asked to see a check sheet of damage or any dents rips etc in the coulings etc when they hire. This is where the sam comes into play. If no check on the underbelly of the jetski then so be it your the next one for the scam if the day goes bad and at present not many tourists are hiring the jetskis hence the 200 baht price rise.

So once you bring it back the nice ride they can now turn your ride into a nightmare. The owners want as much out of you as they can so a small dent will cost you around 3000 baht and a blown motor maybe up to 120,000baht. If you walk away you will be pounced on & locked up or beaten up so heres what to do:

1/. Get someone to call the Thai Tourist Police --call 1155 for the Tourist Police or get someone to go to the Police Station or you go with the hirer. He will want to stay at the beach no doubt to avoid direct Police interference but insist. Say nothing until they arrive??

2/. Be calm--do not yell or make a scene and agree to nothing. It will just mean a jacked up price even further. You will notice that few more Thais will arrive to back there mates up and one will no doubt be the interpreter negotiating a fair price for you and the Jetski hirer.

3/. You will need to settle at some price if all else fails so saying "youre not paying anything" may find you in hospital as these guys are mafia so you need to negotiate the priced asked. They will gang up on you and one will act as your benefactor but he or she is on on the scam. This can take some time but never admit anything until you do see the Tourist Police and only then maybe watch while the story unfolds ot gets bigger. They will negotiate as its the Thai way and try not to let you leave the beach but insist on going to the tourist Police with them.

4/. Remember anything you hire you pay for any damage, blown motors, stolen while you have hired the same and in September now with less tourists the chances of them using Jetski scams to extort money from hiring them out is higher than ever. The same scratch to extort 3-7000 baht for a 70 baht spray can scratch are high and the chances of them even fixing it is slight as long as its going and gives them grounds to hit the next unwary foreigner. These Jetskis in PHUKET are thrashed and when they start using oil its easy to drain them and let you hire it???--guess who pays & the asking price for a a new motor will be min 77,000baht but to fix one isn't more than 20,000 baht for a full recon???? YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED IF YOU READ THIS ARTICLE.
