PATTAYA JETSKI HIRE: THE HIRING PROCESS & HANDY HINTS FOR FOREIGNERS HIRING JETSKIS IN PATTAYA & PHUKET if youre game enough
The seaside city of Pattaya in Thailand is a haven for the single minded tourists and ex pat haven boasting some 1600 bars.However with the sub prime crises affecting Thais therre are many young Thais who come to Pattaya looking for that quick buck. With them are the hire guys who use freinds bikes and cars to rent to unwary foreigners. Pattaya Beach Rd is situated on a 4 km stretch of road along the sea & along the North end are around 96 bars, hotels and restaurants. This is the seafood paradise. Pattaya is famous for its ski boats, jet skis & water sports like fishing with all night bars and nightlife. Formally a US Military rest stop and recreation from the 60s and 70s it saw a rapid change in its development. Today it is a premier beach resort with over 1 million tourists visiting a year. HOW TO GET THERE: From Suvannabhumi Airport, Bangkok, buses leave all the time for Pattaya and cost 173 baht to Jomtien or & cost 200 baht to the bus tgerminal on Pattaya North Rd. Avis offer a limo service for 2,200 baht with chauffeur to the airport. From Bangkok buses leave Ekamai Bus Depot along Soi 63 Sukhumvit Road. They leave every 20 minutes every day. Cost is 120 baht. Taxis will take you also for 2200 baht from Bangkok to Pattaya a 3 hour journey. Pattaya North Rd station has many buses daily from 5.30am to 21.00hours. Also buses go to the Northern Bus Station Bangkok every 30 minutes t & here you can connect to a bus to Chiangmai. From Chiangmai there is a direct Bus from the Arcade Bus Station: Nachonchai Air. This is an excellent service & costs 600 baht leaving every 2 hours. This service includes 2 meals, pillow supplied plus snacks and drinks on board. Takes approx 14 hours and you can stretch out as only 32 seats. Once you reach Pattaya take a Songtaew pickup for 5 baht per stretch of road unless you negotiate before hand. Or take a train from Pattaya to Bangkok 33 baht then hop on the overnight to Chiangmai-choice of 3 trains leaving 6.00pm, 7.40pm & 10pm to Chiangmai. HIRING JETSKIS IN PATTAYA The Police can't or won't help you if you hire a jet ski then you sink it or turn sharply and it fills up with water. The motto in Thailand" whatever you hire whatever is damaged stolen or lost, you pay" so you hire a bike, or jetski at your own risk. You can however negotiate a lesser amount which you are nuts if you don't do but never say you will pay as then the price remians the same or can now go higher. To hire a Jet Ski can cost you around 800baht per 1/2 hour but in September 2009 they want 1000baht per 1/2 hour. Good fun but don't hit anyone swimming or damage the jetski as it will cost you. There is no such thing as insurance for jet ski hire so you do so knowing if something goes wrong you pay. If you blow the motor then its your fault so remember these things if youre game enough to rent one. For my money stay clear of the damn things & there is a scam at the moment as times are tight at the moment. FEB 2010: Mr. Norheim from Norwegian got a bad beating by jetski operators and robbed and assaulted acting as Jetski renters right on Pattaya Beach when he went for a ride on a jetski and left his wallet. He lost 10,000baht to these guys assaulted after leaving his wallet etc with a Thai tout : Mrs. Srisawai Moontreesa [29] from Choomporn he gave to look after. Doing this you ask for trouble especially with money inside the wallet. These guys should be put out of business for Pattaya. BE WARNED. BANANA BOATS TOWED BEHIND SPEEDBOATS On Wednesday 5th December 2010 a female Indian tourist was drowned when she was thrown into the sea riding a banana boat off the coast of Koh Laan island. Pattaya Police said a female Indian tourist had drowned in the sea at Tawaen beach on Koh Laan. Her relatives and tourist guide managed to take her ashore at Bali Hai harbour. Mrs. Ratnamala Pradip Korad, a 51-year-old Indian tourist (passport no. 2792086) had drwoned . She was wearing a green traditional Indian dress not suitable it seems for swimming purposes. Most Indians wear this dress so important to note.

As you will find when it happens to you hiring a Jetski can be bliss or a nightmare. Many of the jetskis are thrashed by their Thai owners and they can be bought second hand at JSSR auction for 100,000baht or so. But most people who hire them are never asked to see a check sheet of damage or any dents rips etc in the coulings etc so once you bring it back the nice ride can turn into a nightmare. If you do take one out you do so knowing after reading this that your 800baht 1/2 boat ride may turn into an 80,000 baht motor repair job. The owners want as much out of you as they can so a small dent will cost you around 3000 baht and a blown motor maybe up to 120,000baht. If you walk away you will be pounced on & locked up or beaten up so heres what to do: 1/. Get someone to call the Thai Tourist Police --or even the foreign Police volunteers who are at the Police station during the day?? and have patience. Some times the Thais will not even let you leave the beach but as you have no money you demand to see a tourist Police. In Pattaya they have 2 foreigners on hand at the Beach Rd Police station. Insist on it or send someone to bring them back? 2/. Be calm--do not yell or make a scene. It will just mean a jacked up price even further or a knife & watch the good guy who speaks Thai that wants to help you. All scammers have one of these. 3/. You will need to settle at some price so saying "youre not paying anything" may find you in hospital!! so you need to negotiate the priced asked AFTER you get help opr simply say you hit nothint and that you work for the media. This can take some time but never admit anything until you do see the Tourist Police then tell them you work for the media & it will be reported and insist on asking for the name of the Policeman. Then maybe watch while the story unfolds ot gets bigger. They will negotiate as its the Thai way--if no joy ring 1155 Tourist Police. 4/. Remember anything you hire you pay for any damage, blown motors, stolen while you have hired the same and in September now with less tourists the chances of them using Jetski scams to extort money from hiring them out is higher than ever. The same scratch to extort 3000 baht for a 45 baht spray can scratch are high and the chances of them even fixing it is slight as long as its going and gives them grounds to hit the next unwary foreigner. These Jetskis in Pattaya & Phuket are thrashed and when they start using oil its easy to drain them and let you hire it???--guess who pays & the asking price for a a new motor min 77,000baht. 5/. Our motto "You hire, you pay" so best STAY AWAY FROM JETSKIS 6/. CHECK OUT TRIPADVISOR FOR FURTHER SCAMS IN PHUKET AND SAMUI and that should satisfy your own mind Some like below are owned by foreign companies but make sure you handle with care as your little 1/2 ride could turn into a nightmare. BELOW IS A GENUINE EXAMPLE FOR THIS FOREIGN COMPANY BUT THIS CASE IS LEGITIMATE. IT BELONGS TO THE FOREIGNER ON YOUR RIGHT BUT HE DOES MAINTAIN THE ONLY LEGIT BOAT SERVICE ON PATTAYA BEACHES. STILL IF THE MOTOR BLOWS YOU PAY!!! SO BE WARNED
This Indian family found out what it costs to sink a Jet ski & fill it up with water. Many would be hirers have little or no experience in turning these Jetskis AROUND & do hit objects
Even those do-gooder Volunteer foreign Tourist Police are on hand to tell you the rights & wrongs & what you will have to pay and you can negotiate settlement
But then you filled the jetski with water--so you as the hirer must pay for the damage which could be anything up to 20-30,000 baht to fix as the Thailand Police will always be on hand to liase. If in such a situation call 1155 for the Tourist Police
As with this jetski the oil was OK & the whole motor needed to be flushed with fresh water (not sea water). In this case the jetski is a Foreign Company owned and is an example only & genuine case but check out below Pattaya Jetski scam.
