SILVER FROM LAOS & ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN BUYING SILVER INGOTS OR NUGGETS Varieties of handmade gold, silver or precious stones are widely sold in 'Talat Sao' (Morning Market) Upstairs in this morning market you will find gold, silver and antiques and this is the best place to buy silver. Thai tourists and many others go into Vientiane to buy gold which is cheaper than in Thailand. The gold found in Laos is 99.99% pure and is sold at a set price per gram. To many westerners, the colour of Lao gold seems a lot more brass looking – but it is true 24 carat gold. Silver is a more reasonable and traditional Lao product and you can buy ingots there – silver is also sold by the weight so is a good investment now as silver will increase in value. Some silver and copper items exported from Laos are subject to tax according to weight.
Silver bar ingot A 'tiger's tongue' This is in the British Museum Thai kingdom of Lanchang (Laos), around AD 1800. From the13th-19th centuries, the monetary system of the Thai people was based on the use of silver ingots, valued by their weight. Each region had its own bar-shaped ingot. Laos used bars with tapered ends. Because of its shape, one form is known as 'canoe' money; another flatter type with rounded, blunt ends, illustrated here, is called 'tiger's tongue'. Around the rim on one side it has a double border of running dots or small rings, several of which have merged together. In the centre is a line of three snake-like stamps. This particular symbol is known as Na and is commonly said to represent the cobra who protected the Buddha as he lay sleeping. The most common size of bars we get are:- One Kilo; Ten Ounces; One Ounce
5 Gram Silver Bar 999 Fine Pure Silver Ingot Bullion Historically, silver was used as the standard for currency around the world. Although silver minted coins are no longer in wide use, investing in silver still provides a great return. Recently, silver has been outperforming gold in growth potential. Remember that it is forbidden to take any antiques or Buddha image ( older than 50 years ) out of laos. Silver bullion bars are invariably .999 silver, which means 999 parts per thousand pure.
