UK Backpacker Kirsty Jones 23 in the year 2000 she was raped & killed in the Aree Guest guesthouse now called 'Mam House'. One of our staff had met her the might before she died and she was an innocent girl not a hooker as many including the Police said she was as we talked to her.
Chiang Mai tourism was suddenlym wenrt down hill for awhile as the investigation got nowhere & evidence had been tampered with from the start; so much for the forensics. Andy Gill aged 32 the South London UK owner was in overstay on his visa, struggling to make ends meet and went into hiding scared of the consequences and when the Police got hold of him Sept 2000 he was locked up and they thought they now had their rapist and murderer.Confusion why the police had charged Gill, who had already been cleared in the early stages of the investigation by DNA tests on blood and hair samples he gave voluntarily?? was now to the point of unreal. But Andy had been identified as the killer by the guesthouse's Thai manager, Surin Chanpranet, 47, who was booked by police on drugs charges since shortly after the murder??? Surin needed to get the heat off himself as he is more like the cuplprit.

Then Gill's Dad paid a 1m baht bribe to the Police after they realized they got the wrong man and Andy took off back to the UK smartly where he stayed---- then told his side of the story from afar--- of course the Thai Police denied they accepted the money. All those staying at Aree were suspects & some beaten up. Stuart Crichton, a 28-year-old Australian keen on street fighting stayed at Aree & then locked up after heroin and cannabis were found in his room. He broke down wanting his mother saying but taken off the list of idiots. They then thought it was Nathan Foley a young Aussie guy staying their & eventually taken off the list of suspects. But the sperm was Thai??? Surin Chanpranet, the guesthouse's diminutive Thai manager a dope freak as well was taken off but then the sperm became too old when the DSI took over???

By now the case was in turmoil and every foreigner in Chiangmai was talking about the stuff ups and coverups & tourism took a downer. The Police also said she was murdered because she refused to have anal sex>?? how about that. Well now you had Aree Guesthouse a dump of a place but cheap & Andy Gill who didn't even have a visa running the joint. It was a hang out for down and outers and close to Somphet Market in the old city and an easy place to score your dope. Andy had been living in Chiangmai for some years on a shoe string but he got on well with the expats of the city and was often seen in many of the local pubs.

By the time police arrived on the scene, several people had already been inside her room, including an entire Thai television camera crew. Police colonel Prasit Thamdi, who lead the murder inquiry was totally useless. Forensics never identified the hair samples so the killer goes free. Finally under pressure from the UK the bangkok DSI got involved in 2005, which is the equivalent of the FBI but by then everything was swept under the carpet to eventually it was forgotten. But why wasn't the DSI involved earlier beats me. One of our members also assisted the DSI in their investigation and seemed to know who killed her??Surin he said the junkie who worked there -- or was it a Tourist Policeman after all; why the cover up? & then they said it was sperm brought in but the Uk investigators say no way---so many unanswered questions and the bribe that the Police of course denied. As you can see this investigation like many are in turmoil from the start???Thai way.
